Progressive Upstart ART NOT WAR Sweeps 2013 Pollie Awards, Including Top Prize For TV Ad in 2013
WASHINGTON, DC – In their first year, ART NOT WAR, an artist-founded, progressive creative agency and production group from Brooklyn, New York won seven honors at the American Association of Political Consultants 2013 Pollie Awards in Washington, DC. The awards were given for ads and creative actions created by ART NOT WAR for progressive groups during the 2012 election year.
ART NOT WAR was awarded the coveted “Best of Show” in Television Advertising for their ad “Backpage”. “Backpage”, written and directed by Laura Dawn, featured a dramatization of real testimony from a young victim of sex trafficking, and became a huge campaign moment for the not-for-profit organization, FairGirls.org who ran the ad.
ART NOT WAR was founded in December of 2011 by former MoveOn.org Creative & Cultural Director Laura Dawn, writer/composer/producer Daron Murphy, and documentary filmmaker David Ambrose. The self-described “earned media ninjas” had a spectacular first year, creating over 100 videos and ads for progressive groups like MoveOn.org, CWA, Courage Campaign, and Fair Elections NY, garnering over 8 million views online and over 15 million dollars in earned media for their clients.
“We’re activists and artists first,” says ART NOT WAR Chief Creative Director Laura Dawn. “And our goal is real change. We don’t work for both sides of the aisle–we work from the heart for groups who want to create the same kind of positive change we do. There are no political consultants on our staff–just artists devoted to social change who live and breathe the work and who don’t mind wearing six hats at once. We bring an emotional, narrative perspective to everything we create.”
“Our biggest goal is to make media that gets real results for our clients,” said Daron Murphy, ART NOT WAR co-founder and Executive Director. “So many organizations don’t prioritize narrative and emotional impact for their message–we work with them to change their focus. And since many not-for-profits are under-funded, we aim to make ads and videos so creative that they become part of the campaign story. We also work with established artists and celebrities whose involvement generates earned media for our clients.”
ART NOT WAR Technical Director David Ambrose concludes, “Our earned media strategies have proven that you don’t need a multi-million dollar ad buy to break through in today’s environment. You just need passionate, well-executed ideas. And that’s what ART NOT WAR is all about.”
